The Voiceline
created by Artist Nick Ryan
The VoiceLine is a unique sound instrument for voice, sound, music and audio storytelling, celebrating the histories of radio and listening which began on The Strand 100 years ago and changed the world. The VoiceLine conjures an immersive journey through an ever-changing world of sound from East to West along this historic street. A rich programme of bespoke audio works will be performed daily, between 8am–8pm.
2022 marks the Centenary of the first scheduled Radio transmission ever made in London. It was created by 2LO - a medium wave transmitter, located, at the time, on the fifth floor of Marconi House on The Strand. This momentous broadcast led to the formation of BBC the same year. Some 20 years later The BBC World Service would make its home in Bush House also located on The Strand, from where it broadcast radio news, speech and discussions in more than 40 languages to many parts of the world. Broadcasting from Bush House lasted for 70 years, from winter 1941 to summer 2012
Responding to the historical importance of this site in connection to radio, broadcasting and the information age, Artist Nick Ryan has created The Voiceline, a site-specific immersive sound installation and the largest public ‘sound instrument’ in the world. It conjures an evolving pathway of audio 170m long from east to west; an ever changing immersive journey along the Strand …inspired by remarkable yet untold histories of radio innovation that began here and changed the world…
